Fun Size

Generally when we hear "Fun size"... small bites of candy come to mind. Halloween and Easter candy wrapped in festive decor. Just the right size to fit in gifts, plastic eggs, and be handed out. A mouthful of sweet... in a passing moment. Big enough to draw you in, small enough to interest you again.
In 1968 small bites of candy were launched, coinciding with a shift towards healthy eating. Although we do not see much evidence that the fun size helped with healthy eating, it sure is a great snack, and a great idea.
"Fun sized" has been used in many ways since 1968.
I was born in 1967. So, I would like to propose that I am a product of the Fun Size generation. I will not go into detail, but I love the suggestion. Fun is fun after all.
In the Winter of 2025, both a dear friend and I lost "life dogs." We had a strong connection through our companions, so in a way of grieving, and staying connected, we decided to hike together every Friday. The goal: explore fun sized areas of Cheshire County, New Hampshire.
Each trip we take, each road we travel, each dead end we venture down, each path we find is fun sized.
We are not getting on an airplane, we do not drive for hours, we do not pack, we do not plan, we do not rely on Google or maps to find the way, we do not necessarily even fill the gas tank. Every week we are out on a fun sized adventure. Getting lost is giddy. Each turn is a choice that we share, taking turns deciding: Right? Left? Which path or road is more enticing?
Three months into our fun sized adventures, I feel as if we have barely touched the county we live in.
Small bites of anything wrapped in decor, just the right size fit into a busy schedule, can be rejuvenating. The air you breathe will feel different after experiencing a fun size trip.
So, the next time you feel the urge to indulge in a meal size candy bar...or a meal size vacation, maybe take a moment to think of small bites.
Trust me, they are worth it.
To fun sized things,
Christina
